This week in the Data Science Spotlight, we are highlighting TDAI core faculty member Steven Quiring and his impactful work at the intersection of atmospheric science and data analytics. Dr. Quiring, a Professor of Geography in the Atmospheric Sciences Program here at OSU, is a co-founder of StormImpact, a startup using data science to reduce the impact and frequency of power outages caused by extreme weather.

StormImpact leverages historical weather data and geographic information to help forecast and mitigate risks associated with severe weather events. In a recent article from OSU’s Office of Innovation and Economic Development, Quiring emphasized the importance of tools like StormImpact in an age of climate and weather uncertainty. His work reflects a commitment to translating complex data into actionable solutions.

Dr. Steven Quiring’s research is a powerful example of how data science can address relevant challenges and reflects a commitment to translating complex data into actionable solutions. His dedication to applied analytics continues to promote the critical role of translational research in shaping resilient systems for the future. TDAI is excited to see where his work takes him next!
